Harwich: Comcast Must Comply with Contract

April 22, 2009

When selectmen hold their weekly meeting in the Griffin Room of town hall, multiple cameras are switched on. Board members and attendees talk to each other but often speak to the greater public with messages for those not sitting in the room. One week, it might be the police chief warning residents to lock their cars at night. Another, it might be an event to raise money for a local cause.

Although treated like a live broadcast, these important Harwich Town Hall meetings, often hosting public hearings, are only being recorded. The town cannot send a live feed into the cable system because Comcast has not upgraded the equipment. The town’s contract with Comcast requires the cable company to enable a live feed from town hall, and town officials have requested that it do so multiple times.
